1. What is the ‘International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking’? How did it come about?
In 1987, the United Nations General Assembly decided to observe 26 June as the ‘International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking’ as an expression of its determination to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse.
In Singapore, the ‘International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking’ will also be commemorated on 26 June and 10 July 2010. A commemorative windmill will be given out to members of the public on 26 June (11-3pm) and 3 July.
The commemorative windmills will also be given out to all students and schools are encouraged to read out a message by the Chairman of the National Council Against Drug Abuse (NCADA) on 7 July.
2. What is the theme of this year’s ‘International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking’?
The theme is ‘Life Does Not Rewind. No Place For Drugs’. Just as the windmill only rotates in one direction, life itself, does not rewind. Through this slogan, we intend to remind youths and adults not to make the mistake of abusing drugs.
3. What will the package contain and what will the volunteers be doing?
The commemorative windmills are packaged with a card containing anti-drug messages. We hope to create awareness amongst students and the public on the objectives of the Anti-Drug Abuse Day and significance of the green and white Anti-Drug Abuse Ribbon. It symbolises health, vitality and strength.
This year, we will be inviting the public and the students to decorate and pen down their anti-drug messages on the commemorate windmills. They will then be invited to display their windmills at Raffles Place Park lawn areas on 10 July 2010. These windmills will be on display from 10 July to 13 July (till 1pm) to further create awareness amongst the public.
Volunteers will be assisting with the distribution of the commemorative items on 26 June and/or 3 July. Volunteers can also be assisting with the planting, display and removal of windmills from 10 July to 13 July at Raffles Place Park lawn areas.
